CORE Education is excited to be working in partnership with the Ministry of Education to support the implementation of Te Whāriki - He Whāriki Mātauranga mō ngā Mokopuna o Aotearoa Early Childhood Curriculum (2017). There will be a range of opportunities for early learning kaiako, teachers and educators to participate, lead and champion Te Whāriki (2017). Regular communications and updates about the programme of work will be provided through a range of media including Te Kete Ipurangi Te Whāriki and Ministry publications.

Opportunities for early years’ educators to become involved in roles leading this work include:
The appointment of 24 Curriculum Champions across New Zealand will be integral to delivering support for the updated Te Whāriki. Curriculum Champions will develop virtual and local networks of pedagogical leaders. Pedagogical leaders will be guided to undertake curriculum inquiries in their services and work with other teachers, educators and kaiako within a community of professional practice. Curriculum champions will have opportunities to engage with their local Community of Learning | Kahui Ako.
Information about these roles will be will be shared as part of the workshop registration process.
CORE Education is asking for expressions of interest from services who would like to be involved in a local network for the implementation of Te Whāriki 2017. Your service will need to identify a Pedagogical Lead who will be supported by a Curriculum Champion to undertake a curriculum inquiry in your own service.
Each network will have between 10-15 Pedagogical Leads that have the opportunity to meet face to face and online to strengthen their knowledge of Te Whāriki 2017 in action. As a service, you will benefit from:
- Direct involvement and engagement in the national implementation of Te Whāriki (2017)
- Building leadership capability
- Deepen curriculum understandings
- Strengthen practice to improve outcomes for all children
- Participate in critical inquiry
As a Pedagogical Lead, you receive:
- Monthly coaching and mentoring from a Curriculum Champion
- Support to lead a critical inquiry into the implementation of Te Whāriki (2017)
- Guidance in leading internal evaluation
- Blended (face to face and online) opportunities to grow your professional networks
- Four hui with other Pedagogical Leads over the year
This is a Ministry of Education funded professional learning opportunity. There will be up to two days of release time available for each pedagogical lead per year to dedicate time for documenting their inquiries. ELS would need to invoice CORE directly.

Curriculum Champions will be in touch at the beginning of term 3 from 24th July to respond to these expressions of interest and to establish localised Communities of Practice.
CORE Education are working on behalf of the Ministry of Education to support the implementation of Te Whāriki: He Whāriki mātauranga mō ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa (2017)
Early childhood services who want to participate in an Early Childhood Network for the implementation support for Te Whāriki: He Whāriki mātauranga mō ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa (2017) and who meet the following criteria are invited to submit an expression of interest.
The criteria for selection:
In the first instance, this will be based on the following:
- The service has the capability and capacity to participate in a curriculum inquiry and Early Childhood Network:
- Well placed to provide quality outcomes for children (most recent Education Review Office evaluation)
- Have sustainable practices, systems and staff
- Strong pedagogical leadership
- Effective systems for internal evaluation
- The Pedagogical Lead is a nominated kaiako within the service who can lead curriculum inquiry, fully commit to and participate in a Community of Practice. They will have:
- A teaching qualification or other relevant ECE qualification
- Full certification (if kindergarten, education and care service and homebased)
- Knowledge and understanding of curriculum and Te Whāriki
- Good understanding of internal evaluation
- Ability to undertake and document an inquiry
- Confidence in using online platforms for engagement/collaboration
Process of selection
All services who meet these criteria are invited to submit an expression of interest. Curriculum Champions will respond to expressions of interest from 24th July 2017 and make individual contact with services. Each network will operate as a face-to-face and online community of practice. CORE Education will work on behalf of the Ministry of Education to ensure equitable opportunities and diverse representation of the sector.

Throughout the programme communities of practice will be established to connect teachers, educators and kaiako, curriculum champions and pedagogical leads. These will provide a platform for collective learning and include opportunities for participants to share their practice and build their kete of strategies and resources for implementing the updated Te Whāriki.
Replacement of live streaming with online video
The Ministry of Education has received feedback that the live stream of the professional development workshops has not been as effective as intended. As a result, live streams have been cancelled and will be replaced with video recordings tailored to an online audience. The videos will be made available soon.
